About this Style

An homage to the ultimate thrill-seekers of the '50s: bikers. Our 1955 501® Original jeans have a distinct “anti-fit” (or, slightly looser cut that stands in opposition to slimmer and skinnier styles) in the seat, as well as slightly fuller cut around the leg and an overall boxier silhouette. This version of the 501® still retains some classic features of its 1947 predecessor: belt loops as the only method of waist adjustment, hidden copper rivets on the back pockets, and a zinc button fly.

We pay tribute to the epitome of American rebellion with these 1955 501® Original jeans—an archival reproduction of their jeans of choice, crafted in premium selvedge denim.

  • An archival reproduction of 1955 501® jeans
  • True to classic biker style, it features a loose, boxy "anti-fit" style
  • We worked with a Japanese artisan mill to painstakingly recreate 1950s Levi’s® selvedge denim
  • Two back pockets with concealed rivets
  • We made this garment with organically grown cotton
  • These jeans are Shrink-to-Fit™, meaning you control the shrinkage yourself, which allows the denim to conform to your unique body. The payoff is a pair of jeans with a custom-made fit. No tailor necessary.

Comparison between the two options: Raw vs Rinsed

I wanted to write this review just to help some other people make a decision about which of these two 1955 jeans is the right one for them. I ordered the "Dark Indigo Organic Selvedge" in 33/34 and the unlabeled option, which in reality is called "Organic Rinse" in 32/32. My actual measurements are about 32/31. I kept the "Organic Rinse" and I'm going to explain why. On arrival, it's clear that "Dark Indigo Organic Selvedge" is raw, unsanforized (aka "Shrink to Fit") and "Organic Rinse" is unsanforized rinsed or one-wash (aka "Pre-Shrunk"). On visual inspection, they seemed to both be the same denim, except for the fact that one is washed and one is unwashed. Both have a similar coloration and a slight nep. The "Organic rinse" has a slightly twisted seam which is characteristic of a washed unsanforized jean. So, to start off, for sizing, in practice, the 33/34 rigid was actually 33/34, which would have been a disaster if I washed it. With a 32 inch waist (5'11", 165 lbs for reference), I'd ideally want the final waist size to be 33 and my experience with LVC rigid says that you drop 2-3 inches on a wash, so I'd maybe want a 35/34. That doesn't exist, so I'd have to choose between a 34/34 and a 36/34 and roll the dice (probably would pick 36). On the other hand, the 32/32 "Organic Rinse" was actually 33/32 when it arrived and it fit great, so this was an easy decision. In wearing, the Organic Rinse pair is fantastic. They were comfy and flexible right away. The denim has a nice color, a little nep and weave irregularity, a nice fuzz on the surface and a very slightly uneven texture. It feels like high quality vintage denim for sure. The weight is quoted at 12oz, and it feels just a tiny bit heavier than that, so I'm assuming that 12 oz was the pre-wash spec and post-shrink it got a bit denser. It feels durable without being overly heavy, and it's clean looking to the point where I'd still wear it with an oxford shirt tucked in. After two initial washes and two weeks of wear, the "Organic Rinse" pair is still shedding indigo, but the denim is conforming nicely to my body as I live in it. The fit of this 1955 model is perfect for me because the high rise (~12.5 in) fits right where it should at my belly button, the waist is significantly smaller than the hip (I'm a 32 waist, 35 hip) leaving me a little room on the hips, the thigh is not tight and pulling the waist down when I walk and the thigh still has a little room even when I sit (my actual thigh measurement is 21" when standing). In summary, this is exactly what I was looking for and I would reorder these without a second thought. One final note: In my opinion LVC is essentially a line made for Japan. One way this is evident is that levi.com barely says anything about these jeans at all, whereas levi.jp is full of useful information about them. This is particularly true when it comes to measurements, where levi.jp has a full table broken down by size. In my experience, these measurements were almost exact to the pair I received. Another piece of info that they supply is that they expect raw denim to shrink 10% and rinsed denim to shrink 3%. Again, this is corresponds to my experience with this pair and others. If you're interested in this line, head over to levi.jp to get the right info about them. This is the page for the "Organic Rinse" pair if you're curious: https://levi.jp/products/501550080

Anti-fit is 👍

These are the best fitting jeans I’ve ever owned. They’re not the typical “original fit.” This is something undoubtedly different. This boxy, anti-fit should become a standard. They sit on the body perfectly comfortably and have a very roomy feel while still looking flattering without looking baggy.

Expensive but worth it.

Fit is just right. I ordered two sizes up from my normal size. It may shrink a little. But jeans are comfortable right out the box. Reminds of how Levi’s used to feel and look when they were made in USA. This is about my fourth pair of Levi Vintage series, I get 4-5 years out of pair by following the instruction. Best advice: Do not wash after wear all the time! Must have been why all my jeans lasted a year at most back when I was younger and did not know better.

What I really like is fit on the Levi’s 1955’s, Boxy and slightly wider bottoms, suit my style, Also the fact being Japanese made, the detail is spot on!
