What is a Capsule Wardrobe & How to Build One

The idea of a capsule wardrobe has been around for a while which according to our research means at least the ’70s, if not earlier. In terms of a formal definition, we’ll give you this:  a Capsule wardrobe is a minimal collection of clothing that can be worn interchangeably for any given occasion. So what does that mean in real terms? All your clothes match so when you’re getting ready for work you can pick out your favorite top and pair it with your most work-appropriate bottoms. Play time? Grab a pair of jeans to swap in for those work pants. It all goes together and it’s all super easy so you’re doing less stressing and more dressing.

As for all women’s assortments, this one may be a little trickier just because women’s clothes tend to be a little more trend-focused but work with us here. Per usual we’re throwing out some options here but you can modify them based on your personal preferences and style. So let’s start. Tees? Yes. of course. Obviously in white at a minimum. Sub in or supplement with simple layering tanks too if that’s more your vibe. Next, something fancy. Pick a couple of blouses that really resonate with you (and can match with a lot of different items). We’re pretty obsessed with a satin button-down for a little bit of sex appeal–but again make sure you’re customizing based on your style. Like we wouldn’t be mad if you subbed that for a denim button down cause that’s more your style. Finally sweaters. Yes, yes, and yes again. Opt for a solid cardigan and a comfy pullover, both. Throw in a more casual sweatshirt in a zip, crew, or hoodie if you want something to lounge in.

We’ve got quite a few subcategories to cover here so we’ll start with our wheelhouse and recommend good jeans as a must-buy. A medium wash in a straight leg will always look chic–again, 501® being our clear recommendation for a timeless feel. A good add would also be black denim because it’s just so versatile. It’s polished but laidback and easy to mix and match. Next, non-denim. We love the versatility of a corduroy pant. It adds some fun texture into the mix and works great from 9-5 and 5-9. Again, a straight leg will never not look great, but you can also opt for a wider or skinnier leg here to mix things up a little. Sweats count as non-denim too don’t forget so grab a pair to make sure you have something for those lazy days on the couch. Shorts are a must. Denim cutoffs are essential. Pick your length and let them go to work for you. Finally, for women, we’re adding in a skirt of your choice. This one is a lot of personal preference, but seeing as we’re the denim experts we’re gonna recommend a denim mini. It’s easy, it’s versatile and honestly a little bit sexy.

You already know the Trucker is on the list–but for a fun twist, we’re going to suggest a sherpa option if you’d like a little extra warmth. Next, something a little more casual. A baseball jacket is our suggestion. It has a timeless sporty look that will really not feel cool. Finally your cold winter option. A puffer totally works, but we also love a timeless overcoat in a long length. Something about the lapels makes it feel effortlessly sophisticated and totally timeless.
