Simply amazing, all the unique small details instantly made these one of my favorite pair of Levi's I own (Levi's is basically all I wear for denim these days)
Was hesitant to purchase a pair of these since I've never brought factory ripped jeans before, it's just never been my style but this year i've gotten into selvedge denim and really liked the power up selvedge cuff detailing.
Although to be honest I still would've much more preferred no ripped knee and rather just a more subtle distressed look like the small thigh tare the pants feature among other small distressing details around the jeans... as someone thats never worn factory ripped jeans before, I dont hate the look on myself but it's also not becoming a staple of my wardrobe anytime soon. but one look at these jeans and all of It's unique details and I was pretty much in love with them. The ripped knee is well done and not overly bold or standout I suppose, though again its not really my thing... i'd suspect for those that like a ripped/distressed denim look they should love the way this knee is distressed and to be honest i've been wearing them much more then I expected I would, prior to getting them in hand there existed a good chance of me returning them out of dislike but obviously that didn't transpire once I felt and seen them in person.
Detailed Features -
Colored Mario inspired button fly is the most unique thing of seen on a pair of Levi's in person... the top button's gold like a coin in Mario well the other 4 buttons are blue, red, green and yellow and the center of the each buttons has either a Mario mushroom or star on it, awesome details!
Mario graphic on the inner waist band as well as full out mario themed pocket liners, vary cool coin patch popping out of the jean's coin pocket! and of course the Levi's size tag has some sweet Super Mario branding and a star and mushroom.
and as previously mention a unique selvedge denim "power up" cuff detailing
Blue Levi's pocket brand tab (more on that below)
As for the 501 '93 straight fit, I do believe it feels different then other 501's I own... I wish I could explain how/why they feel differnet... meaning I wish they'd add the '93 straight to the Levi's jean guide well the '93 straights are part of the Levi's production line currently. I find the Levi's jean guide vary helpful in making online purchases as it explains all subtle differences in Levi's jean cuts... I imagine the '93 collection will continue for awhile to capitlize on 90's fashion trends and I believe collections that aren't just one offs should be apart of the Levi's jean guide.
I havent directly compared the jeans layed out over other 501 jeans I own but from my intial thoughts wearing them they seemed to be a slightly baggier fit, possibly featuring a change in the rise height or maybe a slightly longer seam length then whats stated on the size tags, the ankle/leg opening seems to be a standard 501 width...
Again wish Levi's provided more details explaining how the '93 straight cut varies from standard 501s... I don't believe any of the hang tags mentioned details explaining anything about the 501 '93 straight cut. Would've been nice to have a better understand of what the '93 straight jeans are exactly, I own them and still have literally no idea what makes them different then any other pair of 501's besides marketing... couldn't tell you what the point was to bring the '93 styling back besides the recent booming return of 90's fashion. If you ask me, Levi's has done a poor job of explaining the '93 collection and it's purpose of reintroduction to the Levi's line.
I want to know what makes these jeans different and why there back besides to capitalize on the recent 90's fashion trend... which is perfectly fine if thats all it's about but I feel like i'm missing part of the story when it comes to the '93 straights, I totally like the idea of a throw back Levi's denim cut and got no complaints about the fit or feel of my 501 '93 straight jeans... Levi's litature states and its generally beleived that the Levi's 501s are a timeless American jean cut, so whats the '93 501 in comparison to the timeless classic?... why did Levi's change the design back in '93? and what exactly we're/are those changes? the '93 collection from what ive seen lacks explanation of what makes it different and unique to standard 501s? what's it heritage or importance and significance to the Levi's brand? are the '93 straight a baggier fit like popular 90's fashion? etc etc
If your gonna bring something back from the Levi's archive, I believe it deserves more thought put into the story telling/marketing aspect. I shouldn't have to put in time and research or directly reach out to the Levi's customer service just to find out what makes one collection/model different from the next.
Again, if the '93 collection is here for a season or two like i suspect it will be given current fashion trends, I see no reason why it wouldn't be added to the Levi's jean guide to give customers an easy explanation of how the 501 '93 straights vary from the standard
And finally the Levi's pocket brand tab is blue!
I own some products that have the blank R trade marked tabs and have read about the colored Levi's tabs before but this is the first time I've seen a blue Levi's tab in hand, which represent "Levi’s Made and Crafted, the brand’s premium line."
These jean's are for sure premium Levi's denim as marked on the pocket liner and instantly felt upon first picking them up in hand, I could certainly feel the weight difference of the premium denim compared other quality Levi's denim I own.
Something i'm quite curious about is I dont know if all the Mario 501 '93 straight jeans feature a blue Levi's tab like my pair does because when I was looking at photos of these jeans and other pieces in the Mario collection online prior to purchasing my pair of jeans, I happened to see some featuring green tabs, yellow and even the standard red tabs, so I have no idea if the jean tabs feature varying colored tabs from blue, red, green, and yellow which would be the same colors used on the button fly and Mario's graphics... whatever the case may be I was quite shocked and super happy to see a blue tab on the pair I brought!
It's funny how even the smallest details like a different colored Levi's tab can make a world of difference in the beholders eyes... at least to me, I think it's absolutely awesome to see a new colored Levi's tab for the first time! and now I really, really want to get some Levi's products with a green or yellow tab or one of the other special tab colors that exist on certain Levi's products.
Bottom line Levi's did an incredible job on the Mario collab collection and I like the 501 '93 straights ... just dont ask me why haha
Overall Im happy with my purchase and would purchase more from either of the Mario or '93 Levi's collection's
