It’s been said that you’re either born with style, or you’re not.
For designer, artist and sartorial maverick A$AP Nast, a distinctive fashion-forward POV comes naturally—although he’ll be the first to admit that he rehearses how to maximize that swagger. “There are days when I just wake up and I know what I’m gonna put on because I’m inspired. And I have days when I genuinely practice what I’m wearing,” he explains about his process. “I wake up and I already have 200 ’fits in my head because I’ve already tried them on.” It’s this balance of methodical practice and the intuitive ability to put together looks that makes Nast’s style so effortlessly iconic.
He describes his aesthetic as a mix of two ’90s legends: Grunge anti-fashion hero Kurt Cobain and hip-hop game-changer Tupac Shakur. About the former he explains: “I think Kurt, like with his cardigans, he dressed so ‘normal,’ but he did it in his own way. He made normal feel like so much more.” Similar to Cobain, Nast is also a lifelong 501® Jeans aficionado—he even turned his denim customization skills into a lucrative side business for a hot minute. “I’ve owned Levi’s® my whole life. I would source them downtown at vintage stores, then I would distress them myself. I got so good that everyone started coming to me.”
