WellThread® HW21 # Onze duurzaamst ontworpen collectie ### [__Duurzaamheid__](https://www.levi.com/NL/nl_NL/blog/category/sustainability) /  augustus 2021 Share  De textielindustrie stoot jaarlijks maar liefst 1,2 miljard ton broeikasgassen uit. Dit is meer dan alle internationale vluchten en de zeevaart samen! En dat is het ergste nog niet, want drie van elke vijf gemaakte kledingstukken belanden elk jaar op de vuilnisbelt of worden verbrand. In sommige landen wordt 40% van de kleding die gekocht wordt nooit gedragen. Hoogste tijd om deze statistieken terug te draaien. Nu de wereldwijde klimaatcrisis elk jaar erger wordt, kunnen we de impact die onze industrie op het milieu heeft niet zomaar naast ons neerleggen en de wegwerptendensen als een onvermijdelijke realiteit accepteren. Om onze ecologische voetafdruk zo klein mogelijk te maken, doen we voortdurend onderzoek naar radicale nieuwe manieren om de kleding waar jij van houdt te maken met minder schadelijke gevolgen. WellThread® is de naam van het onderzoeks- en ontwikkelingslaboratorium (kort gezegd R&D-lab) waar we onze innovaties bedenken, ermee experimenteren en ze perfectioneren voordat we ze op grotere schaal implementeren in alles wat wij als merk doen. Het is ook de naam van onze meest duurzaam ontworpen collectie. WellThread® is de drijvende kracht achter deze inspanningen. We kijken hierbij niet alleen naar de natuurlijke grondstoffen die in onze kledingstukken verwerkt worden. Wij kiezen voor een holistische aanpak, waarbij aandacht voor het milieu in alle fases van ons productieproces centraal staat. ## WellThread® is de plek waar we onderzoek doen door onze innovaties in de praktijk te testen. – Paul Dillinger, Vice President, Head of Global Product Innovation  ## De vier pijlers van WellThread® De kwaliteit van onze kleding is voornamelijk te danken aan de grondstoffen waaruit zij vervaardigd is. Daarom wordt elk kledingstuk van WellThread® zorgvuldig vervaardigd met het oog op de toekomst, en met vier designprincipes in het achterhoofd.  __HET MILIEU CENTRAAL STELLEN__ Om onze ecologische voetafdruk zo klein mogelijk te maken, beginnen we met het inkopen en werken met materialen die minder water en chemicaliën gebruiken. __WELZIJN VAN WERKNEMERS__ De mensen die het beste weten wat werknemers nodig hebben, zijn de werknemers zelf. Daarom hanteert ons welzijnsprogramma voor medewerkers een unieke benadering om in hun behoeften te voorzien. In de eerste stap vragen onze leveranciers de fabrieksmedewerkers zelf wat ze nodig hebben om zich meer betrokken, productiever en gezonder te voelen. Zodra die behoeften in kaart zijn gebracht, sluiten we samenwerkingsverbanden met lokale en nationale non-profitorganisaties en ngo’s om programma’s in te voeren die beter aan de behoeften van de werknemers voldoen.  __DUURZAAMHEID EN TIJDLOOSHEID__ Om de wegwerpmentaliteit die in de kledingindustrie heerst te ontwrichten, hebben we lang nagedacht over welke stijlen in de WellThread®-collectie opgenomen zouden moeten worden. Het feit dat een bepaald item hiervan deel uitmaakt, is omdat we er vertrouwen in hebben dat het de tand des tijds zal doorstaan, zowel qua stijl als duurzaamheid. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan klassieke T-shirts, essentiële Truckerjacks (met een uitneembare voering zodat je ze het hele jaar door kunt dragen) en natuurlijk slijtbestendige jeans. __RECYCLEBAAR__ Verminderen. Hergebruiken. Recyclen. We kennen deze woorden allemaal, maar het blijkt qua uitvoering moeilijker dan gedacht. Sterker nog, minder dan 1% van de kleding wordt gerecycled. Om dit aan te pakken, hebben we de afgelopen jaren veel tijd gestoken in een circulair ontwerpproces en onze WellThread®-items aangepast, zodat ze gerecycled kunnen worden en door materiaalherwinning omgezet in iets anders.   ## “Een circulair ontwerpproces is belangrijk omdat het ons in staat stelt om de middelen die al in onze kleding zijn opgenomen, te optimaliseren.” — Una Murphy, Director Design, Global Innovation Elk component van een kledingstuk dat gemaakt is door WellThread®, van de stof tot de iconische Levi's® Two Horse patch en de rits, kan gerecycled worden. Door stijlen te ontworpen met monomaterialen die gerecycled kunnen worden, zorgen we ervoor dat de kleding niet op de vuilnisbelt belandt, maar in plaats daarvan een tweede, of zelfs derde, leven krijgt. Als het kledingstuk echt niet meer gedragen kan worden, kan het altijd nog worden verwerkt tot iets volkomen nieuws. ### MILIEUVRIENDELIJK VERFPROCES __VERVEN MET ULTRASONE BRON__ Dit seizoen zijn we aan het experimenteren met ultrasone verfapplicaties. Nee, dit betekent niet dat we de kleuren al zingend op de stoffen aanbrengen. Het betekent dat we in plaats van chemicaliën, die in de meeste traditionele verfprocessen worden gebruikt, een sonische frequentie gebruiken om het pigmentmolecuul aan de vezel te laten hechten. Zo wordt een chemisch proces dus vervangen door een fysieke toepassing. Een leuke bijkomstigheid is dat bij dit proces ook nog eens veel minder water wordt verbruikt dan bij de traditionele verfprocessen. Klinkt best cool, of niet soms? __PLANTAARDIGE KLEURSTOFFEN__ De wereld om ons heen is gevuld met kleur. Door te putten uit natuurlijke pigmentbronnen, verminderen we onze afhankelijkheid van vervuilende synthetische chemie en besparen we water. Dit seizoen vind je in de hele collectie een reeks natuurlijke kleurstoffen met hele mooie namen. Zo ontlenen onze denim-items hun kenmerkende opvallende tint aan een natuurlijke plantaardige kleurstof uit indigo. En onze non-denimstijlen zijn geverfd met biogebaseerde synthetische kleurstof op basis van plantaardig afval. Met andere woorden: we gebruiken het pigment uit de afgedankte flora, zoals amandeldoppen en zelfs medicinale planten. Vervolgens gebruiken we een niet-toxisch, glucoseverlagend middel en brengen we het pigment aan met onze Water<Less®-technieken. - [SHOP DE LOOKS](https://www.levi.com/NL/nl_NL/c/levi_collections_wellthread)   __GOED SPUL__ Aangezien katoen de basis is van bijna al onze producten, is het een must dat we naar nieuwe manieren zoeken om de gemeenschappen die dit gewas verbouwen beter te bereiken. Daarom gebruiken we in ons hele assortiment ook steeds meer verantwoord geteeld katoen. __BIOLOGISCH KATOEN__ Je vraagt je misschien af: “Als ik geen katoen gebruik, waarom zou ik dan voor biologisch gaan?” Hoewel traditioneel katoen als product niet schadelijk is voor jou, de drager, kunnen de chemicaliën die doorgaans worden gebruikt voor de teelt hiervan gevolgen hebben voor de boeren die zich toegelegd hebben op deze gewassen, de inheemse fauna en de omgeving. Voor de teelt van biologisch katoen wordt er geen gebruik gemaakt van pesticiden, herbiciden en meststoffen.
