At Levi Strauss & Co., we’ve always believed that what we do is just as important as what we make. From the very beginning, Levi Strauss set that standard—donating a portion of his first profits in 1853 to a San Francisco orphanage, closing the company on election day so employees could vote and funding scholarships for women at the University of California, Berkeley.
Breaking the Mold
In 1934, we introduced Lady Levi’s®,the first jeans engineered specifically for women. We also supported some of the first all-women sports teams.
Integrating Progress
We began desegregating our factories during World War II—more than a decade before it was required by law. In 1960, we opened one of the nation’s first fully desegregated factories.
Supporting LGBTQ+ Equality
In 1992, we became the first Fortune 500 company to extend health benefits to unmarried domestic partners. In 2007, we were the only California company to sign onto an amicus brief with the California Supreme Court in support of same-sex marriage, and in 2015 we were one of just three companies that publicly endorsed the Equality Act when it was first introduced.
Continuing Our Impact Today
We’ve pioneered environmental innovations, such as water-saving finishing techniques that are now industry-standard, and taken stands on defining issues of our time, including: gun violence prevention, reproductive rights and paid family leave. Through our two foundations, we invest in underserved communities and provide emergency support to employees and retirees.
