When news of the California Gold Rush reached Bavarian
immigrant Levi Strauss, he joined the thousands making the
journey west to find their fortune. While others panned for
gold-flecked prosperity, Strauss was perfecting his XX Waist
Overalls, which in 1890 would be given the lot number 501.
They became the uniform of cowboys, cattle hands and
frontiersmen who helped form the west.
