Levi’s® Vintage Clothing

Welcome to Folk City

July 16, 2019

Vintage Levi’s® jeans are a coveted commodity among lovers of second-hand clothes and style, who can tell you tales of hours spent digging for the perfect denim. For those of us who love the look but dread the search, there’s Levi’s® Vintage Clothing. Faithfully capturing the spirit and heritage of American workwear, Levi’s® Vintage Clothing reproduces the fits, fabrics and details of bygone eras. And this season, we’re dipping back to the ’60s for a collection we call ‘Folk City’ — a tribute to the artists and folkies of 1960s Greenwich Village.

An Era of Change

The twang of American folk music alongside the cosmopolitan chaos of big city Manhattan might seem like odd bedfellows, but for several years during the late 1950s and early 1960s, the two were all but inseparable. Thanks to the revival of American folk music that sprung from New York’s Greenwich Village, scores of folk musicians, artists and beatniks invaded the city to start the movement that would go on to define popular bohemian culture (and style!) for decades to come. Drawing from a deep well of early 1900s folk artists, this new generation of musicians created a soundtrack for  all over the country.

Flash Forward

This season’s collection features a range of styles inspired by both these musicians as well as real pieces from our Levi’s® archive. Check out the Suede Sherpa Jacket, a replica of a Levi’s® suede jacket featuring our big “E” Red Tab and Levi’s® Shorthorn label. There’s also a range of ‘60s style tops, such as the Bay Meadows Long Sleeve Tee and the Aran Sweater.

There’s also our 1961 551®Z Jean, precursor to the 505® and Levi’s® first foray into men’s pre-shrunk denim. Not to mention the style foundation of the late 1960s counter cultural movement.
