Although our denim is durable and made to last for years to come (just ask all our vintage-collector friends), you can still do your part to maintain them as well. Here are our favorite care hacks to keep your jeans looking their absolute best.

   As a general rule, we recommend washing your denim sparingly. Over-washing can ruin the unique characteristics of your jeans, such as the creases and fades that naturally develop with wear. A good rule of thumb is to wash your jeans after about 10 wears, unless they are visibly dirty or start to smell. Between washes, spot clean any stains with a mild soap and a damp cloth or an old toothbrush.  ### HOW TO WASH JEANS: STEP BY STEP ## 1. TURN THEM INSIDE OUT When you finally do need to throw your jeans in the washer, here’s the best way to prep them. First, always make sure to turn your jeans inside out. This simple (but usually neglected) step protects the outer color from fading and minimizes direct contact with chemicals and detergents. SEPARATE YOUR COLORS If you aren’t already, we highly suggest that you wash your jeans with similar colors to prevent dye transfer. USE A MILD DETERGENT This part is crucial when it comes to machine-washing denim—especially for colored and dark wash jeans. (Black jeans in particular are prone to losing their depth of color with regular detergents.) A mild detergent that’s formulated for darker colors can help prevent fading. AVOID FABRIC SOFTENERS We love fabric softeners as much as the next person, but they can leave a residue on denim, which may affect texture and appearance. Instead, go for a vinegar rinse to soften the fabric naturally and remove any detergent residue. ## 7. WASH IN COLD WATER ONLY Next, check that your washing machine temperature is set to cold. Hot water might *seem* effective, but it increases the chances of shrinkage and color loss. ## 8. CHOOSE THE GENTLEST CYCLE We recommend setting your wash cycle to the gentle or delicate setting to reduce wear and tear on the fabric. ### HOW TO WASH NEW DENIM When washing just-ripped-the-tag-off new jeans, especially dark-wash denim, keep them completely separate from your other wash loads (for the first few). This type of denim is unwashed and untreated, so the gentler you handle it, the better. Fill a bathtub or large sink with cold water and add a small amount of mild detergent, then soak your denim for about 30 minutes. Next, rinse your jeans thoroughly with cold water to remove all remaining detergent and dirt. Avoid wringing out raw denim to keep its shape and unique, custom fit. (And again, choose the shadiest area possible.) Another great option for air drying is to use a drying rack, which allows air to circulate around the jeans and speeds up the drying process.
