Photographer Kava Gorna released her first book, “100 Cheeks,” in 2016. It pays homage to women’s derrieres and the power of a good pair of jeans. We knew she was the perfect person to shoot the Levi’s® Spring 2017 women’s shaping collection. See all the amazing shots Kava took, and read our conversation on two of her favorite things: photography and denim.
Initially my book wasn’t just Levi’s®, but then it started to kinda filter down to just vintage Levi’s® because they have a great way of wearing and customizing to the body. And I found that the booty looks the best in those across the board. So the project almost initially was kinda like a field study, and then I started editing the book and made some other cropping choices. But yeah, I like how Levi’s® wear out and have a story to tell.
EACH GIRL HAD AN UNMISTAKABLE AND UNIQUE SENSE OF CONFIDENCE WHEN WEARING HER JEANS.
IF YOU COULD PHOTOGRAPH ANYONE IN THE WORLD, WHO WOULD IT BE?
Right now, it’s Hillary Clinton.
WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY LISTENING TO?
I’ve been listening to a lot of Aphex Twin, Panda Bear and Nicholas Jaar.
WHAT’S YOUR SIGNATURE OUTFIT?
I’m a T-shirt and jeans girl. Black jeans are my go-to.
WHAT ATTRACTS YOU TO A PAIR OF VINTAGE JEANS?
Can you guess what usually attracts me? How they look on my butt!
I picked up photography to rebel against my mom, who really disliked it. Art was always part of my life. We always went to museums when I was a child. My mom studied art history so she introduced it into our lives. But she was always quite opposed to photography. I started taking photos in high school and then really got into it in the second half of college.
I try to focus on more intimate moments and really connect with the subjects in my images. It’s important for me that my subjects are comfortable and feel natural to me. I like to relate to whomever I’m shooting. I also like to find locations that my subjects relate to, whether it’s somewhere they’re passionate about or feel comfortable or that relates to their personality in some way.
I’ve loved every photo shoot I’ve ever done. I enjoy my job so much that I feel like every other photo shoot that I do, I’m like, “That was awesome.” It’s nice to go to a new location, and do something in a beautiful place, but it’s also really amazing to shoot with a subject who’s really present, giving and inspired. So I can’t say there are favorites necessarily.
I swiped a pair of jeans from a friend of mine when I was living in Europe. It was this weird ‘90s European cut of Levi’s® and it definitely became my favorite jean. I recently started wearing them again, and they look terrible and amazing at the same time. They’re these low hip flares that are cut too short, like super ‘90s, and they’re so ripped up—it’s embarrassing.
I also just got the sickest pair of boys’501®s. I think they’re becoming my favorite pair. The pockets are really small on these boys’ jeans, but I actually like that. Obviously, I have quite a few favorite Levi’s®.
