LEVI'S® ARCHIVES: LEVI'S® FIND AT CASTLE DOME ### [__Op locatie__](https://www.levi.com/NL/nl_NL/blog/category/on-the-scene) /  juni 2022 Share  Elke Levi's®-broek vertelt een verhaal. In de Castle Dome's Hull Mine bij Yuma, Arizona, schildert de vondst van verschillende historische Levi's®-broeken, elk meer dan een eeuw oud, een levendig, tastbaar portret van het Oude Westen — en van de mijnwerkers en arbeiders wier harde werk de Amerikaanse grens opbouwde. Aan het eind van de 19de eeuw was Castle Dome City een bloeiend mijnstadje, vol met hardvochtige figuren, gelegen in Arizona's langst bewerkte mijndistrict. Vandaag is het een museum en "spookstad", tot in de puntjes gerestaureerd door natuurbeschermers Allen en Stephanie Armstrong. Bezoekers kunnen tientallen gebouwen verkennen, gevuld met echte artefacten die uit het verleden gered zijn, om het Westen te ervaren zoals het ooit was.  Levi's® historicus Tracey Panek kreeg onlangs een bijzonder telefoontje van Allen Armstrong. "We hebben een behoorlijk historische, belangrijke vondst gedaan," zei Armstrong. "We denken dat we nu de grootste verzameling van denim Levi's® van vóór 1900 ter wereld hebben". Panek krijgt niet elke dag telefoontjes als deze. "Het is zeldzaam te vernemen dat er een Levi's®-broek uit de 19e eeuw ontdekt is," zegt ze. "Het is nog zeldzamer te vernemen dat er meerdere tegelijkertijd ontdekt zijn." Panek reisde naar Castle Dome om het zelf te zien. Armstrongs buit was uniek: Levi's® 201 jeans, versleten en verweerd, maar in opmerkelijk gave staat. Onderzoek van de jeans zelf leverde belangrijke aanwijzingen op over hun afkomst. Een verrassend leesbare afdruk op de binnenzak van één broek, plus intacte achterlappen van stof, identificeerden de broeken als Levi's® 201's, een prijsvriendelijk model dat ongeveer 15 jaar na de 501® op de markt kwam. Dat de broeken elk een enkele achterzak hadden, was nog zo'n teken dat veel duidelijk maakte — de tweede achterzak werd pas in 1901 toegevoegd. Met deze gegevens in de hand kamde Panek het archief van Levi's® door om deze jeans in de tijd te plaatsen. In juni 1890 stuurde Levi's® een bericht naar een klant met de aankondiging van de Levi's® 201's, beschreven als de "No. 2 geklonken overalls die we de laatste tijd op de markt hebben gebracht". Dat betekende dat deze broeken ongeveer 130 jaar oud waren, een zeldzame vondst. De ontwerpers van Levi's® verwijzen vandaag nog steeds naar de unieke slijtagepatronen die het dagelijkse werk van de mijnwerkers meer dan een eeuw geleden opleverde. En de kwaliteit van deze "tweederangs" jeans inspireert de ontwerpers van Levi's® nog steeds bij het maken van betaalbare producten van de hoogste standaard. Zo leeft het verhaal van deze mijnwerkers — en dat van het Westen zelf — voort in Levi's®.
