We hebben het over motivatie en inspiratie, en natuurlijk alles dat met stijl te maken heeft.* Maak kennis met onze maandelijkse muze van maart: [Evelynn Escobar-Thomas](https://www.instagram.com/evemeetswest/), een tweede generatie "cis Black" en native Guatemalteeks-Amerikaanse outdoorliefhebber en activiste met een passie voor representatie en het samenbrengen van gekleurde vrouwen om hun plek in de natuur terug te winnen. Misschien herken je Evelynn van haar opvallende vertegenwoordiging op digitale media, of ken je haar van [Hike Clerb](https://www.instagram.com/hikeclerb/), een intersectionele wandelclub voor vrouwen die ze heeft opgericht en die zich inzet om van het buitenleven een inclusieve en toegankelijke omgeving te maken voor vrouwen en BIPoC. Zo niet, dan laten we je graag kennismaken met deze supergetalenteerde "communitybuilder" uit Los Angeles, die altijd in is voor avontuur en het allemaal met een glimlach doet. Hier bespreekt ze intersectionaliteit, het creëren van ruimte en vreugde vinden in de natuur. Lees verder om meer te weten te komen over Evelynn in haar eigen woorden.  ## Ik was een van die kinderen die in bomen klommen of in het bos gingen spelen toen ze jonger waren, dus mijn liefde voor de natuur was er altijd al. ### LATEN WE BEGINNEN MET JE ACHTERGROND EN JE RELATIE MET HET BUITENLEVEN. Ik kom oorspronkelijk uit Noord-Virginia, maar ben nu zes jaar hier in Los Angeles. Toen ik opgroeide, was een van de dingen waar ik altijd naar uitkeek, mijn tante in L.A. bezoeken en met haar wandelen. Ik herinner me een van mijn eerste wandelingen, ik was ongeveer 10 jaar oud, we gingen naar het observatorium van Griffith en ik vond het het coolste ooit! Het is nog steeds een van mijn favoriete wandelroutes in L.A., waardoor ik toen de smaak echt goed te pakken kreeg. Ik was een van die kinderen die in bomen klommen of in het bos gingen spelen toen ze jonger waren, dus mijn liefde voor de natuur was er altijd al.  ### VERTEL ONS OVER HIKE CLERB. WAT HEEFT JE GEÏNSPIREERD OM ERMEE TE BEGINNEN? Ik ben in 2017 begonnen met Hike Clerb als een manier om gekleurde vrouwen samen en in de natuur te brengen. Toen ik 23 was, ging ik voor het eerst naar Zion National Park, en ik denk dat ik er nooit echt over nagedacht heb totdat ik daarnaartoe ging en dacht: "Wow, het is zo homogeen." Je beschouwt deze plaatsen als grote toeristische bestemmingen, en je denkt dat het representatief zal zijn voor hoe het land eruit ziet, maar dat is het niet. Ik merkte dat ik een beetje geschokt was door het gebrek aan diversiteit, representatie en participatie die je daar ziet. Als zwarte en bruine vrouw, die bevriend is met andere zwarte en bruine vrouwen die ook van de natuur houden, had ik het gevoel dat niemand ons ooit echt een veilig gevoel heeft gegeven, of dat we op andere plekken worden vertegenwoordigd. Het starten van Hike Clerb was voor mij een manier om anderen ruimte te geven, maar ook om gezamenlijk ruimte te creëren en te laten zien dat wij hier ook thuis horen. Ik wilde een veilige omgeving creëren waar je helemaal jezelf kunt zijn. En die ervaring uiteindelijk het startpunt laten zijn voor je eigen ontdekkingsreis in de natuur.  ## WAAROM DENK JE DAT HET MOEILIJK IS VOOR MENSEN VAN KLEUR OM IN ONZE WILDERNISSEN ONTSPANNING, AVONTUUR EN TROOST TE ZOEKEN? Als je echt naar de kern ervan kijkt, is het altijd een heikel onderwerp geweest. We leven allemaal op gestolen land. De enige manier waarop we deze grote parken kunnen toe-eigenen of zelfs creëren, is door de oorspronkelijke bewoners te verdrijven. Het buitenleven wordt gezien als iets idyllisch, maar het wordt ontsierd door geweld, genocides en dwangarbeid. Veel verschillende culturen hebben hun band met het buitenleven verloren, waarvoor het een toevluchtsoord en een plek voor genezing en ontspanning is vanwege de geschiedenis van het land waarop we leven.  ## WAT BETEKENT HET VOOR JOU OM BUITEN RUIMTE TE CREËREN? Ruimte creëren betekent helemaal jezelf zijn, zonder excuses. Niet het gevoel hebben dat je je moet aanpassen of ergens bij moet horen, of jezelf in iets moet plaatsen dat onnatuurlijk voor je is om anderen zich op hun gemak te laten voelen. Het gaat erom sterk te staan ​​en te weten dat we evenveel recht hebben om over net zoveel ruimte te beschikken als ieder ander. Het gaat erom dat je helemaal jezelf bent en je je daar het beste bij voelt en dat gebruikt om hopelijk anderen te inspireren, zodat hoe meer ruimte we creëren, hoe meer we dit idee de kop indrukken dat door witte suprematie wordt gevoed: dat deze dingen niet voor ons zijn of dat we daar niet thuishoren. ## Het buitenleven wordt gezien als iets idyllisch, maar het wordt ontsierd door geweld, genocides en dwangarbeid. ### JE BENT STERK IN JE GEMEENSCHAP VERTEGENWOORDIGD, ZOWEL ONLINE ALS OFFLINE. HOE VIND JE BALANS IN AL JE WERK EN DAARNAAST NOG TIJD VOOR JEZELF? Hike Clerb is een groot deel van het werk dat ik doe, maar we zijn nu eenmaal drukke wezens. Mijn sterrenbeeld is niet voor niets Maagd. Ik ben gewoon graag met heel veel dingen tegelijk bezig, of het nu gaat om nailart, sneakers of streetwear. Alles wat me ertoe aanzet om te blijven doen wat ik doe, wordt gevoed door mijn eigen gevoel van doelgerichtheid en de vrouwen die me zo hebben geholpen om zelfverzekerd in het leven te staan. Ik ben hier niet alleen gekomen en dat is wat me helpt om door te gaan en te blijven ontdekken.  ## NU VOORZICHTIGHEID GEBODEN IS OM BUITEN TE ZIJN, WELK ADVIES HEB JE VOOR IEMAND DIE VOOR DE EERSTE KEER WEER IN VERBINDING MET DE NATUUR WIL KOMEN OF HET BUITENLEVEN WIL GAAN VERKENNEN? Doe gewoon wat je kunt met wat je hebt. Ga kleine natuurwandelingen maken, ga in het park zitten, loop blootvoets op het gras en voel je één met de natuur. Haal de natuur naar binnen: verzorg je planten en maak dat onderdeel van je dagelijkse ritueel. De meeste mensen denken dat je fysiek buiten moet zijn om contact te maken met de natuur. Het is belangrijk om te onthouden dat we uiteindelijk zelf de natuur zijn. We maken deel uit van dit grootse ecosysteem, dus standaard hebben we een aangeboren connectie. Gebruik dat als je basis om die relatie met jezelf tot ontwikkeling te brengen.  ## Het is belangrijk om te onthouden dat we uiteindelijk zelf de natuur zijn. Moeder worden terwijl de wereld op zijn kop staat, is echt bizar, maar wel op de goede manier. Zoals voor velen van ons, waren er voor mij een aantal hoogtepunten, dieptepunten en zoveel nieuwe successen, midden in een pandemie. Maar ik ben van plan door te gaan op de basis die ik al voor mezelf en met Hike Clerb heb gebouwd. Een basis die gekleurde vrouwen, met name zwarte en bruine vrouwen, helpt om zich gezien en gesteund te voelen bij al het werk dat ze doen op de best mogelijke manier.
