WHAT WE’RE WEARING VOL. 15: THE VINTAGE-OBSESSED ART DIRECTOR ON WHEELS
Style /
December 2020
These days, Levi’s® Associate Art Director Sarah Coburn has been doing a lot of “zooming” — on video calls, but also neon-wheeled roller skates she found on eBay. With holidays approaching, we asked the vintage-obsessed Brit how she plans on staying social and stylish. (Spoiler: sequins will likely be involved.) This, in her own words, is what she’s wearing.
I've always had a bit of a bugbear of bumping into someone wearing the same thing as me. That’s why I love vintage shopping — rummaging for hours to find statement pieces I know someone else won’t have.
My style is a little tomboy, a little androgynous and a little grandma. I find if you pair the grandma with streetwear, it knocks it back. I once found this killer leather jacket in a vintage store in Amsterdam. It's very ‘80s — tassels, leather lacing, a buckle — and looks great with a grandma dress.
Oversized is big for me. I buy a lot of men’s clothing. I’m all about strong printed shirts, European military stuff, and mixing the feminine with the masculine and functional. My vintage Levi’s® SilverTab™s are the dream jean — high-waisted, kind of straight, loose and a great mid-blue wash.
I’m from Yorkshire, England and moved to San Francisco in February. I started rollerskating in July, and bought quite a few fun, statement pieces to skate in: this vintage silk shirt, vintage silk bomber, the Levi’s® Sherpa Trucker. I can’t say I'm very good, but it's an absolute blast—a reason to shut the laptop and get out.
Because socializing is limited, I do make more of an effort style-wise when there’s an occasion, virtual or in-person. It’s a way to feel good and put yourself out there again. Getting withdrawn is easy, so take any moment to shine.
Around the holidays, I’ll probably have some virtual parties and maybe drinks outside. I really enjoy dressing up — getting out of my routine and putting on a velvet dress with sequins. My family does a big Christmas video call, so I’ll need to get some festive “zoomwear” together. Like a vintage Christmas jumper, that’s my jam.
My boyfriend is from Idaho, so we’re going there to visit his family. Not sure what I’m wearing yet. I like to be cosy on Christmas day, so maybe a sort of sequins and jumper combo? I might have to get some red cowboy boots.
