What We’re Wearing Vol. 25: Make It Yours with Sunny and Gem

They share clothes, a workplace and a house full of plants. What’s not to love about Sunny and Gem? Both longtime Levi’s® employees—Sunny (née Rachel) is the Director of Global Campaign and Content and Gem’s a Senior Designer with Global Brand Creative—the couple has hit their stride, now refining rather than reinventing their styles. The pair gives us a few of their go-to looks, plus discuss how they double their wardrobes (hint: they shop each other’s closets). This, in their words, is what they’re wearing.

GEM:

The basic green chino with the denim top is my go-to. I like wearing things that are comfy enough to take a nap in at home, but also good enough to wear grocery shopping or hang with friends. It’s chill, not precious.

If I don’t know what to wear, I’ll put on a denim shirt and army green pants and some mules and call it a day.

SUNNY:

For this look, I got a really oversized men’s western shirt and trimmed the bottom off it. It was super long, which is a look, but I wanted to try a raw edge.

Chambray is a bit of a uniform for me—I bring a chambray shirt pretty much everywhere I go. It’s the perfect layering piece, and even doubles as a scarf around your neck or whatever you need it to be. I have a few of them, but this one’s the newest in the collection. It’s super oversized, which is great.

I dabble in tailoring my own clothes. It’s been a while because I haven’t had a reason to customize anything for public viewing, but I do like to add a hint of something personal if it’s new or off the rack. Generally, I prefer thrifting. I love scrubbing eBay for unique finds—not because I need it to be the only one, but because I just prefer older stuff.

SUNNY:

This is my first time trying the Ribcage. They’re cute! They quickly fell into the rotation. I tend to wear menswear, top and bottom, so this is a change.

GEM:

I love a Trucker Jacket and jeans pairing. Not matching, but just complementing each other.

SUNNY:

I’m all about the neutrals. Always the chambray, and I love army green. I don’t wear a lot of denim, unless it’s through the chambray top. We’re not super denim folks. Though, I will always rock an old pair of 501®’s, and it has to be in denim. That’s the one major exception. You need that as an anchor in every wardrobe.

GEM:

I get wild when something inspires me or I get in the mood, but I’m pretty neutral and stick to the basics.

SUNNY:

Gem can rock colors and trends. He looks cool in everything. When I try to step outside the neutral zone, it looks costumey. It looks like I’m trying on a look. Gem can pull it all off.

GEM:

But with her hair, it’s like its own accessory. It’s its own look.

Rachel and I, when we go on trips we bring just army green, black, white and denim. If you have all those as your palette, then you never go wrong with your outfit.

SUNNY:

And it doubles the wardrobe too because we get to share each other’s clothes!

GEM:

She borrows my quilted jacket, or I borrow her sweater. We share chambrays, we share tops.

SUNNY:

We share clothes because, why not? Getting dressed is a lot easier. Packing for trips is a lot easier. Clothing doesn’t have a gender besides what we assign to it. I’ve always preferred men’s clothing. I like the shapelessness of it. It’s boxier, cooler.

When I was younger, there was a stigma about going to the men’s section as a thirteen-year-old girl. So you’re stuck wearing what you can find. It’s not like that anymore. I don’t care what people think about what I wear. I wish I had known this preference earlier in life.
